In-Class Exercises for Monday, July 25

Reflecting on writing Explanatory Report
Take a few minutes to write responses to the following questions:
1. How was this report different from other reports you have written?
2. Did you consider including any visual component in your explanatory report? If so, did you include it and what challenges did it present? If not, why not?
3. If you had all the time you needed and could be sure you would succeed, how would you try to change your explanatory report?
4. What should I do differently next time I use this assignment for English 106 students?

Planning for the Proposal: Anticipating Objections
1. Summarize your proposal in writing, including the following
a. State the problem in one sentence
b. State your proposed solution in one sentence
c. Identify the audience for your proposal as specifically as possible
d. Describe the format you plan to use for your proposal

2. Exchange proposals with a classmate and role play the part of the intended audience. Raise as many reasonable objections to the proposal as you can, such as:
a. Is it too costly?
b. Will it take too long to be effective?
c. Is it impractical?
d. Is it ethically objectionable?
e. Any other objections you can think of

3. Sketch out a plan for any remaining research to be done.

Assignment for Tuesday, July 26

Read the sections on “Observation” (pp. 519-522) and “Surveys” (pp. 526-532) in Call to Write. Identify and begin conducting any remaining first-hand research (surveys, interviews, observations) you need to support your proposal.

Instructions for In-Class exercises for Monday, July 18

Reflecting on Writing: Take several minutes to write a response to the following questions. You may discuss with your project teammates.
i. What was the most difficult part of your process and how did you overcome the difficulty
1. finding appropriate sources?
2. evaluating
3. choosing sources?
4. writing annotations for sources?
5. preparing the bibliographic citations?
ii. What aspects of the project did you enjoy the most?
iii. What is one of the most important things you learned?
iv. If you had unlimited time to work on the project, how would the final result be different?
b. Brief discussion of reflection; how should instruction or class time and conference time be used differently next time I teach this?
c. Please turn in a print copy

Examining how scholars introduce and integrate sources into their writing
a. Download from your email and create your own Word copy of the sample article sent to you.
i. Highlight sentences in which information from sources is used.
ii. Put introductory works in bold
b. Go over results together.
c. Turn in by sending via email to roses@purdue.edu
d. If time, have students do the same for one of their sources.
